type='text'>Lucy Ellen Watson

My great great grandmother, Lucy Ellen Watson, can trace her ancestors back to the kings of England, Spain, and France.

Here's how it goes:

Lucy Ellen Watson is my great great grandmother. Lucy's mother, Harriett Anthoine, is the 7th great granddaughter of Sarah Cushman (1641-1695). Sarah's mother, Mary Allerton, is the daughter of Isaac Allerton and Mary Norris, two of the passengers on the Mayflower. Mary Norris, is the 10th great granddaughter of Eleanor Plantagenet (1311-1372). Eleanor is the 2nd granddaughter of Henry II, King of England (1132-1189). Henry's children and grandchildren were the royalty of Europe during the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries. One son was Richard I (the Lion-hearted) of England, and another was Geoffrey, Duke of Brittany. He’s a good place to examine the English side of my family.

This week, I found another of Churchill’s descendants whom I believe is my 2nd cousin, once removed. She lives in Boston, and her family tree shows that her family traces their connection to Churchill from his son George (1880). Mine traces from George’s older brother Albert (1871). Their middle sister, Harriett (1875), completes the siblings of Churchill’s second family. Their mother, Lucy Ellen Watson, married Churchill in 1868, after the death of his first wife, Louise Anne Peabody. Louise and Churchill were married in July of 1850, and had three children: Frank (1852), Emily (1860), and Louisa (1863). Lucy lived on her own after Churchill died, in a house that she owned free of mortgage from 1896 until she moved in with her younger sister, Elizabeth Holden, on a farm in 1915. At 82, she moved in with the family of her son George until her death in Gorham, New Hampshire after 1930.

Churchill lived his entire life (1821 to 1896) on his father’s farm in Shelburne, New Hampshire. The son of a timber harvester, he made sure that his children all went through high school, and pursued occupations which provided well for their own families in the later part of the 19th century. My great grandfather, Albert, loved travel in his younger years. His training at Worcester Polytechnical School in mechanical engineering led him into automobiles. While starting a family, he used his knowledge to open an automobile garage, and to obtain a position as chauffeur for wealthy new England families, including one which employed him to ship and drive them in their car throughout Europe. Later, he was hired as the Maintenance Manager for the Brown Corporation's Paper Mill in La Tuque, Canada, until his death in 1943. Albert, and his wife Ida Marr, had two sons. His oldest son, Churchill, died as a young man. His younger brother, Everett, was the first of the Lary lineage to attend college. His love of science, encouraged by his brother, led to a degree in chemistry, to a specialization in chemical warfare in the military in World War II, and to a career in oil exploration and production. His daughter, Louisa, became a teacher. His oldest son, Frank, worked for the railroad all his life.

Churchill’s ancestors lived since the mid 1600’s in Rowley and Bradford, Massachusetts and in Sanbornton and Wolfesborough, New Hampshire.

France Roots Trip Successful

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 134px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_58XeZeqhNFc/TEzj5eC_emI/AAAAAAABCmo/Nu_kmUZ19zk/s200/DSC_0110.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498019821570194018" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 134px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_58XeZeqhNFc/TEzj5LEuD2I/AAAAAAABCmg/WJJd1ZH1_es/s200/DSC_0150.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498019816477167458" />

Greetings!

I just realized that I forgot to post the results of our trip to France last fall. We had a wonderful time visiting 6,000 kilometers of France. Beginning with my ancestral home town of Mortagne au Perche, I found even more than I thought possible. The town's church (where my ggggggrandparents were married) has a stain-glass window depicting their landing in Quebec, and a wall placque with their names on it. There is also a museum in the area with an exhibit dedicated to the journey they took (with 98 others) to Quebec in the 1630's.

Here's a link to some posts I made to our travel blog: Mortagne au Perche

Our trip to France continued on to Normandie, Bretagne, and 12 other provinces before spending the last week in Paris. It was an adventure which strengthened my own sense of French history and my French heritage. History is always much more interesting when your own ancestors lived through it. To learn more about the adventure, visit our blog for each day after the link above.

And have fun exploring your heritage.

Gregory

France Roots Trip Successful

Greetings!

Finding my Ancestors in France

Greetings!

Zacharie Cloutier and Xainte Du Pont were married in Mortagne au Perche, where we're going to spend our first night on our trip to France in a couple of weeks. We're reading seven books on France, and the route is beginning to take shape. Our trip to France begins on September 17th at 7:35am at the San Francisco Airport, and ends at the same place forty-one days and one minute less than twelve hours later on October 28th at 7:34pm.

But it actually all began in 1544 in the town of St. Jean, Mortagne, Perche, France. That's the town we're headed to once we land in Paris.

Nicholas Cloutier was born there, and was his son (Denis) and grandson (Zacharie). They were carpenters who struggled to keep their families alive in the late 1500's and early 1600's. On January 15, 1634, Surgeon Robert Giffard, a notable proponent of a Canadian community, was soliciting potential emigrants when he received notice that he had been awarded the Seigneurie of Beauport from the One Hundred Associates. Giffard had been in New France before, from 1621 to 1626 and again in 1628. In 1634, he successfully recruited several citizens of Perche as prospective residents for his newly acquired realm, one of which was Zacharie Cloutier. The work he signed on to was to expand the colony of New France by settling the Beauport area near Quebec City.

There's a nice family history website at Zacharie Cloutier
which gives you a short history. A look into his wife, Xaintes Du Pont, is at: Xaintes Du Pont> and their family is chronicled at: Cloutier

We'll be spending the first week of our trip visiting the home towns of my french ancestors in and around the Perche area, sixty miles west of Paris.

Gregory
<img width='1' height='1' Understanding that the children of my father's brothers and sisters are my first cousins, and that the grandchildren of my grandfather's brothers and sisters are my second cousins, what are the grandchildren of my father's brothers and sisters to me?

The answer is that we are first cousins, once removed. Cousinship exists if we have a common ancestor, and do not share a common parent. The number of generations apart we are from each other determines the number of times we are removed - up or down.

Thus my first cousins are:

Austin Chick and Jonathan Chick, sons of Kathleen Lary Chick, my mother's sister.
Theodore, Roger, Carol, and Terry Skare, children of Eloise Skare, my father's sister.
Patricia Shaw, daughter of Laverna Savedes, my father's sister.
Children of any of them are my first cousins, once removed.

Similarly, the children of my grandmother's (Edna Leen Fearon Maxwell) brothers and sisters are also my first cousins, once removed: Arvid, Dawn, Leslie, Norman, Derald, and Larry Leen. Their grandchildren are my second cousins.

The children of my great grandmother's (Anne Marie Jonsdatter Soine) brothers and sisters (Jon, Juliane, Anne Marie, Ove, Eva, Emma, Geneva, Julia, Syver, Alfred, Sever, and Clare Soine) are my first cousins, twice removed. Their grandchildren are my second cousins, once removed. Over the past week, I have met with three cousins, one of them a first cousin. I have found my grandfather's grave (pictured below), and will look for my grandmother's in Prior Lake in a couple of days. I've spent time with my Aunt Eloise, who at 93 is still active and enthusiastic about her life.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_58XeZeqhNFc/SL4KrauOM_I/AAAAAAAAK3A/RP-5uKChNPQ/s200/DSC_0134.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241638757329679346" />

In the next week, my wife and I will be traveling to Ray, North Dakota to try to learn more about the lives of my grandparents and their siblings. A married father of three young daughters, he also had the responsibility for the town's security.

But his life had provided ample experience to bring to miliary service in Europe. Born in Belfast, Ireland in 1890, his family history was based in Cumberland, England. Coming to America in 1892 from Ireland with his parents, John and Mary Fearon, the family spent some time in Illinois before finally stopping in Scammon, Kansas. Joining the Kansas Infantry in Topeka when he was 18, he rose to a non-commissioned officer in four years. Upon dischage, he traveled to Ray, North Dakota in 1912, and married the eldest daughter of a local Norwegian farm family. Accepting a position on the police force, he rose to the position of Police Chief over the past five years. In the block asking if the were any reason why he should be excluded, he wrote a large emphatic "NO", and handed his registration to Roy Enerson, Chief Registrar. Nevertheless, he remained in his post through the war, and had one more child eight years later - my father.

Continuing Research

Greetings!

Here are the continuing questions which drive my research currently:

1. Who were my father's father's parents? My grandfather's selective service record in 1917 indicates that he was born in Belfast to John Fearon and Mary Walker. I'm looking for William Walker Fearon's birth certificate, or record of birth, in November 9, 1896. I'm also looking for any records of his parents.

2. Who were Pat's father's parents? Jan Kuta and Katherine Olearski were born in Poland. We think we know the town names, and have located hers.

3. Who were my wife's brother's wife's father's great-grandfather's parents (Marvin Miller, born in 1817 in New York)? Who were her father's grandmother's parents (mary A.Miller, born in 1858 in Massachusetts)? Who were her father's mother's father's parents (John Monigle, born in 1869 in Ireland)? Who were her father's mother's mother's parents (Joseph Laware, born in 1824 in French Canada, and Mary Laware, born in 1832 in French Canada)?

4. I'm doing some research on the family of a friend of mine, Jim Evans. We are looking for his father's father's parents, and have located .

Back from Scandinavia (Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway)

Greetings!

For a detailed report of the trip, go to the travel blog I used to write up the daily adventures (GFPK Travels).

I also am correcting and augmenting the Ancestry.com family tree that I have established, and will be posting photos and documents, and other info into individuals in the family tree. That history connects the earlier information on my Wisconsin, Minnesota, and North Dakota relatives which I received from Shirley Manning and my aunt aunt Eloise Skare - to relatives around the towns of Vang and Hedmark in Norway.

Of my ancestors in Vang, I know much more due to the many resources I've been guided toward from the Valdres Samband. I've obtained many texts, a DVD, and links to quite a few websites and other materials. I have less information on the my great grandfather's side of the family (from Hedmark), and may learn more research connections while traveling to there.

But my main hope is to see the farms where my great great grandfather (Jon Johan Johnson Lajord Soine) and his wife (Ingaborg Ovesdatter Kattevold), and their parents, were born. Those are the farms with the following names and gardnummers: Ovre Kvale (38/7-8); Berge (22); Norde Tune/Sender (36/2); Soine (50); Lajord (51/3); Myre (47/1); Kattevold (44/1-4); Boe (42); Sore Ellingboe (34); and Norde Haen (70).

I'm going to contact the genealogist for the Valdres Samband to see if he can help me make contact with someone in Vang who might be of help during the four days I will be there. Some have said that the local residents wouldn't mind my showing up without notice, but I would feel much better with someone in the area who knew our relatives or who could direct me to best use my time.

We leave this Thursday, July 6th, and will be gone until mid August. I'll post trip journals as I can on our travel blog (www.gfpktravels.blogspot.com). When I return, I'll make a slide show and post it on YouTube.com for those interested in what we saw and did.

Have a great summer.

Gregory Fearon
Pat Kuta

Soyne family farm photos

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_58XeZeqhNFc/Rd3UPtdPXPI/AAAAAAAAATQ/y-MvBkJlQ0M/s200/IMG_0110.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034413324835446002" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_58XeZeqhNFc/Rd3UQNdPXQI/AAAAAAAAATY/-dpuY5eGNR4/s200/IMG_0107.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034413333425380610" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_58XeZeqhNFc/Rd3UQddPXRI/AAAAAAAAATg/El2XkzTwMvQ/s200/IMG_0105.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034413337720347922" />
Greetings!

My friend and cousin, Trudy Sondrol Wasson, sent me these photos of the Soyne family farm. Most of the questions concern the period of 1800-1860, and relate to the transition from Norway to the U.S.

1. Who lived on the Soine farm in Vang, Valdres, Norway? Who from that farm traveled to the U.S., and became members of the Soine family here? and when, and where did they settle? I've gotten a referral from my cousins Bob Skogman and Shirley Manning to Erling Nefstad. Erling lives on the Soine farm, in a house directly across the street from the site of the original house.

2. Where do the Lajordes fit into the Vang, Valdres, Norway history? If my great great grandfather, John Johnsen Soine, came to the U.S. on the Statsraad Vogt in 1848 with two others his same age from Vang (Nils Tronsen Lajordes and Anders Andersen Lajordes) whose names are nearly the same as that reported to be his mothers name (Anna Sjugurdsdatter Lajord) - could these be his cousins? Where did they settle into in the U.S.? My latest information seems to indicate they are cousins of my great great grandfather, and that they settled in Minnesota.

3. Some of the others who came over on the Statsraad seem to have names which relate to my family. Do they have relatives or farms in Vang which can be located? The names (and ages) are: Knud Halvorsen Strand (30), Anne Halvorsdatter (26), Anne Haaversdatter Berge (22), Halvor Haldorsen Hagen (20), and Ingebret Christophersen Heen (49). Do they have descendants in the U.S.?

4. There are names from the ancestry of my great great great grandmother mentioned in #3 above) which are Haen, Kvale, Kattevold, and Bo. What can be found out about their descendants? I found farms in Vang for Bo, Ellingboe, Haen, Kattevol, and Kvale in the database online.

This is a start at some key questions I'm interested in getting any information which readers can provide.

Soine Family Information

Greetings!

My Soine heritage begins in the Valdres Valley in Norway, around the town of Vang. I spent some time ten years ago corresponding with a cousin of mine in North Dakota - Shirley Manning. Shirley sent me several long letters filled with information on her and my Soine ancestors, and helped me assemble at rudimentary family tree with the information I had gathered. There were still many pieces missing, and I remember making a vow to try to fill them in when I reached retirement.

One of the most interesting genealogical tools was a photograph taken by Torger Soine at the farm of my great grandfather - Julius Michaelsen Leen - in 1915 a few miles west of Ray, North Dakota. It was a panoramic view of 73 relatives and neighbors standing between the barn and the house on the farm. Appearing in the picture are the my great-grandmother's brothers and sisters or their children. I thought that It would be interesting to write up the story of how they got to that moment.

John Persson Kvale - Great-great-great-grandfather.
John Persson Kvale was born in 1800 in Valdres, Norway. At the age of 26, he and Anna Sjugursdatter Lajord (19) had a son, Jon Johan Johnsen Soine. They were never married. John later married Marit Torsteinsdatter Skelhaugen, and had children from that marriage.

Anna Sjugursdatter Lajord - Great-great-great grandmother.
Anna was born on the Lajord farm (Gardnummer 51/3 Berget) in Vang, Valdres, Norway, in 1805. She had a child with John Persson Kvale (Jon Johan Johnsen Soine) in 1826. She married Christopher Larson Heen in 1829. Between 1830 and 1844, Anna gave birth to three sons (Lars in 1830, Syver in 1842, and Ole in 1844), and two daughters (Anne in 1833 and Marith in 1836). She died of dipteria with her husband Christopher and their daughter Marith in Michigan in 1853.

Lars Soine - Great-great uncle.
Lars Soine was born in 1830 in Norway. He married Anna, and they emmigrated to the U.S. in 1858. There is an indication that they were living in Warsaw Township, Goodhue County, Minnesota in 1867. The 1910 Census indicates them still living there. Their son, Tars Larson Soine, was born in Wisconsin in 1860. Neither Lars, nor his wife Anne, are in the photo.

Tars Larson Soine -
Tars was born in Wisconsin in 1860, and married Anne T ?. Both the 1900 and 1910 Census shows them living in Warsaw, Goodhue County, Minnesota. Their children were: Ludwig O. (1898), Clarence E. (1900), Carl J. (1903), Anna S. (1905), Bernhart (1907), and Selma B. (1908).

Anne Soine - Great-great aunt.
Anne was born in 1833 in Norway. Soon after arriving in the U.S. with her parents and family, she died of diptheria in Michigan in 1853.

Syver Soine - Great-great uncle.
Syver was born in Norway in 1842. Their children were: Edith (1908), Muriel (1910), Arnold Ovester (1914), and Joseph (1915). All are in the photograph.

Sigrid Gulbrandsdatter Steinde-el Lundseiga

Martin Soine

Olaf Soine

Syver Soine

Jon Johan Johnsen Soine - Great-great grandfather.
Jon Johan was born to the union of John Persson Kvale and Anna Sjugursdatter Lajord on November 23, 1826 in Berget at Lajord, Vang, Valdres, Norway. Jon Johan died on November 14, 1888 in Renville City, Renville County, Minnesota. While Jon Johan signed his name "Soine" on the passenger list in 1848, the earliest use of it for others is in the photo taken on the family farm in 1915, and in the listings for Ole and Sigri Soine in the 1910 Census.

Ingaborg Ovesdatter Kattevold - Great-great grandmother.
Ingaborg was not on the farm the day the picture was taken. My great grandfather, Julius Mikkelsen Leen, has been the focal point of the Leen lineage. My father referred to him as Julius Mikkelsen, and the story was that the name was somehow changed to Leen once he got the the U.S. The easy answer to those name changes was always the clerks at Ellis Island, or the Registrar on the passenger ships, who couldn't pronounce foreign names. The answer that I have determined from correspondence with other documents that it was Lien in Norway, but was changed by some to Leen when they came to the U.S. The passenger records on Norwegian ships are consistently spelled Lien from Norway. Those named Leen almost always came from Ireland or England.

My grandmother, Edna, had three brothers (Homer, Clarence, and Floyd), and two sisters (Eloise and Lillian). Homer had children who carry on the Leen name. I believe that they live in Oregon and Washington, and I'll be contacting them to let them know of my renewed interest in the family history.

A couple of weeks ago, I used the search mechanism within Ancestry.com to look for Leen and Lien information in the U.S. Census records. I was responding to an email from Alan Peterson, who had let me know about his ancestor (Christian Mikkelson Leen), who had brought a family over to the Wisconsin area in the 1860's. He indicated that Barron County History records contained information that one of Christian's sons was named Julius.

I searched the 1860 to 1930 Census records for Leens who were born before before about 1850, and who could have brought family over in the 1860's:

Ole Leen was born in Norway in 1815. In the 1860 Census, he was living with his wife, Dera (b.1813 - Norway), and three sons, Avon (b.1847), John (b.1850), and Oldor (b.1854) in New Hope, Portage County, Wisc.

Oler Leen was born in 1817 in Norway. His wife, Marthey, was born there in 1824. In the 1880 Census, they were living in Leon, Monroe County, Wisconsin with their son Hans, who was born in Norway in 1854.

John Leen was born in Norway in 1821. The 1880 Census indicates that he was living at the time in Schlewig, Manitowoc, Wisc. His wife (Mary - 1828), son (Gilbert - 1860), and daughter (Mary - 1864) were all born in Norway. The census does not indicate when they arrived.

C.C. Leen was born in Norway in July, 1821. His wife, Maria, was born in Norway in January of 1834. He came to the U.S, in 1861 and she in 1869. Their daughter, Jessie (b.1873), and sons Oscar (b.1875) and John (b.1878) were born in Wisconsin. In the 1900 Census, they were all living in Strongs Prairie, Adams County, Wisc.

Annie Leen was born in 1830 in Norway, and arrived in 1866. In 1920, she was living with her son, George, in Pleasant Valley, St Croix, Wisc.

Anton Leen was born in Norway in 1833. He emmigrated with his wife Kristin (b.1831) to the U.S. in 1868. In the 1900 Cesnsus, they were living with their son, John (b.1875) in Alden Township, Polk County, Wis.

Ole M Leen was born in 1848 in Norway, and emmigrated in 1868.
